Bonnaroo 2009 Preview
Bonnaroo 2009 is almost here 45 days to be exact and as always The Planet Weekly is Tuscaloosa’s best source for news, photos, and interviews during the summer music festival season. This year is a big year for me. It will be my 5th year to cover Bonnnaroo. I’ve seen it all, and yet when the lineup came out this year I was still surprised. All I could think about were those 4 days in the Tennessee Sun that seem to last all year, through countless stories among friends and strangers.
Bonnaroo is truly a spectacular place, it offers more than just music and attractions, its a destination. This year’s Bonnaroo experience promises to be one for the ages, boasting a tremendously diverse lineup of musical acts and genres. There is something for everyone this year. Hippies, ex-hippies, indie-lovers, bluegrass, country folk, and hip-hop followers alike will all be offered something they can’t miss. I have friends who save 20 dollars a month all year just to get a ticket, because its 100% going to be a great time, and 100% worth the money. It really doesn’t get any wilder or more fun than this nonstop, 24-hour party, in the middle of nowhere, with the best acts in the world performing around the clock.
The word Bonnaroo in Cajun means “Really Good Time.” The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a four-day, multi-stage camping festival held on a beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee every June. Bonnaroo brings together some of the best performers in rock and roll, along with dozens of artists in complementary styles such as jazz, Americana, hip-hop, electronica, and just about any contemporary music you can think of. In addition to dozens of epic performances, the festival’s 100-acre entertainment village buzzes around the clock with attractions and activities including a classic arcade, on-site cinema, silent disco, comedy club, theater performers, a beer festival, and a music technology village. For its peaceful vibe, near-flawless logistics, and unrivaled entertainment options, Rolling Stone magazine named this revolutionary entertainment experience one of the 50 moments that changed the history of rock and roll.
Set to headline this year is none other than The Boss, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Bruce is currently and has been one of the biggest live acts in the United States since the 1970’s. Heck first glance of the lineup I instantly emailed my mother and guess what my mom, is coming to Bonnaroo for the first time after years of hearing about what hella good time it is from me. Springsteen’s energy and ability to connect with anyone though his music will rock the What Stage which will make this headliner one of Bonnaroo’s most memorable acts.
Bonnaroo also went back to their roots inviting the epic jam band Phish to come headline. Having the quintessential jam band headlining will almost certainly send the masses to Bonnaroo. Phish will play two shows on the main stage, including a two-set performance and an additional late-evening set. Bonnaroo is the only festival on the band’s 2009 touring schedule.
If the headliners aren’t necessarily your type of music, (trust me you’ll watch them anyway and have a great time) here are some other acts. Hip-hop lovers can indulge in the rhythm and rhymes of the Beastie Boys and Snoop Dogg. The more indie/alternative music lovers, are in for quite a treat this year, with acts including: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, MGMT, The Decemberists, Of Montreal, and Band of Horses just to name a few.
Other noteworthy performers include Andrew Bird, he is extremely talented and can play about anything that can make music, MIA is full of insane amounts of energy. Jenny Lewis, who has performed at Bonnaroo the past three years, always, always puts on a great show, one of the best female performers of the time; Elvis Costello, known for his soothing sounds and intricate wordplay; rock legends Nine Inch Nails probably the most different sounding type of music the entire weekend. Talking Heads front man David Byrne, a must see show!! Also, you must check out the Comedy Tent! Each year Bonnaroo brings a variety of great comedians to come and entertain, and here’s the best part, you get to laugh your ass off while in air conditioning. This is a perfect break for mid-afternoon.
So if this Article doesn’t help you make your decision to make it to bonnaroo, go to www.bonnaroo.com for even more information. This is 4 days that you’ll never forget and it is 1000 times better than any beach trip I’ve been on.
Bonnaroo Survival Guide.
So since this is my 5th year attending Bonnaroo I have gathered a lot of great information from the web to help make our Planet Weekly Readers more prepared than the rest.
Getting there
Plan on waiting a long time to get into the site, I arrive around 2 pm on Thursday. Usually you will have to wait 2 to 3 hours in line to get into the main gates. BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR TICKETS FOR EVERYONE WHO IS IN THE CAR BEFORE YOU LEAVE. I have heard far to many stories about people who thought they packed their tickets but left them back home. Don’t take the back roads. Come into Bonnaroo via Interstate 24, not only is it faster, but you also get very decent camping a 20-minute walk to Centeroo vs. 1 hour. Fill up on gas in your car before you get into traffic. Try to hold off on the serious partying until you get into the site, open containers of alcohol (and of course drugs) are illegal in Tennessee and the cops aren’t blind to what people do in their cars while waiting in line.
Campsite
Set up your tent before you get there, its so annoying not knowing how something works and having to spend a lot of time reading really poor made instructions. I see the Bonnaroo campsite as base camp for your entire weekend. This is where all your friends come together to get ready for the festivities that will happen through out the day. With that said it is a must that you have some kind of shelter, for example a tarp or a pop up canopy. I suggest the canopies because its 100% going to work, be real easy to put up and for less than $100, with out this you will be completely miserable
Sunscreen
This has to be one of the most important things. It can be extremely sunny in Tennessee. Put it on as soon as you get there. If you fail to do so, I guarantee it will be the worst sunburn of your life.
Clothing
It is going to be hot. Guys, Shorts and t-shirts are perfect and ladies basically a swimsuit and gauzy skirts or thin dresses. once you get there you’ll know what I’am talking about. It may rain so bring a rain jacket and some kind of water proof shoe. No flip flops, you’ll get so pissed off that you will end up walking around barefoot and trust me you don’t want to do that. You may get chilly at night since you got soooo sunburned during the day, bring a light sweater or jacket. Wear Sunglasses and be sure that it has a string attached to them so they don’t fall off your head while dancing or running around. Bring a couple hats that will keep the sun out of your eyes and off your neck.
Water
Drink lots and lots of water. Stay away from beer during the afternoon. I suggest having something like a camel back or a Nalgene that is compact and easy to carry.
Food
This is something that took me two years to figure out. Be prepared Bonnaroo food is good but its pretty expensive (8 to 12 bucks for a meal) and your going to want to save your money for better activities. Bring a nice variety of munchy food for late night snacks. Also don’t bother buying energy bars because cliff bar has always had a tent up at bonnaroo and they give out 1000’s of free ones all day every day. I suggest bringing a charcoal grill to make hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steak. Heck I’ve even seen people with full on BBQ smokers cooking racks of ribs.
